AI tools aimed at enhancing video production workflows have been popping up everywhere lately, from automatic editing software to AI voice generators. As a content creator for BlueMoon Productions, I’m constantly seeking new ways to streamline and improve my editing process. With that in mind, I decided it might be time to try one of these AI voiceover tools to see if it could be a valuable addition to my toolkit.
My latest project was a narrated launch video series for a charity organization. With several different versions required, I thought it might be the perfect opportunity to try out an AI-generated voice for the guidetrack. But after putting it to the test, it became clear that this tool wasn’t the game-changer I had been led to believe it would be. Here’s how it went:
Getting Started
There are numerous AI voiceover platforms to choose from with varying levels of customization, with most of these services billed as a monthly subscription. I selected one claiming to feature a wide assortment of voices, ranging from professional to more character-driven tones. Male or female, old or young—the options were vast… but the quality left something to be desired.
The majority of the voices sounded like they set the “dramatic” scale to eleven, and I had a hard time finding one that was soft yet meaningful, a voice that would fit the tone of the charity video well. I ended up selecting a voice that was close to what I was looking for, but didn’t quite hit the mark. The tool was simple enough to use, and allowed me to tweak the speed and tone of the voice, but how were the results? Well, that’s where things got interesting.
AI Voiceovers: Not Ready for Prime-Time
Once the voiceover was generated, I quickly realized it didn’t sound nearly as good as the demos. Some phrases were passable, while others fell completely flat. Adjusting the speed or tone didn’t seem to make a substantial difference—more like applying filters than modifying the AI’s core behavior. What stood out most was this “uncanny valley” effect: the pacing and intonation felt off, like a guitar slightly out of tune. It created an unsettling feeling where a viewer might ask, “Is that a real voice or does it seem fake?”
I added commas, periods, and quotation marks to the script to try to force pauses and emphasize key words. It helped to some extent, but the AI tool was still pretty inconsistent. The result was a voice that lacked the tonality and emotional depth needed for the final video, but could probably still work well as a guidetrack… right?
The Workflow: Quick, but Not Painless
Although the AI voiceover tool allowed me to quickly generate a placeholder voiceover for syncing in Premiere Pro, I still had to spend time editing it—cutting and adding gaps to achieve proper pacing and direction. Even with the artificial breaths inserted, it still lacked the natural rhythm of a real voice.
As the deadline neared, we ultimately decided to bring in an actual human voice talent to finalize the video. With their natural pauses and emphasis, I was able to trim and align the audio more effectively, bringing out the message’s true impact. In the end, the AI voice simply lacked the flexibility required for this project.

Human voice talent is essential for capturing the emotional depth your video needs.
